Well its rained a bit

Just popped to the allotment. It's like a hurricane and quagmire too windy to do much. Dumped some soil on to try and dry it out a bit.
Pictures of our budget plot against the bents plot which is very nice and tidy.
Our Allotment, half dug and starting to take shape ...
Great plot ~ fellow allotmenteers something to aspire too
Slightly water logged
Very muddy and in need of a good deal of digging and additional compost

Chitting

Charlotte - Classic salad potato
Lots of Potatoes

Well I think may have ordered too many potatoes.

We have six varieties
  1. Charlotte
  2. Rooster
  3. Red Duke of York
  4. Maris Piper
  5. Maris Peer
  6. King Edwards

 CHITTING
Chitting is simply a way of kick starting your potatoes.  Leaving them in a warm place with their eyes upwards and waiting for them to sprout their first shoots, then they are ready to plant out into your prepared plot.  Hoping to plant ours out in next couple of weeks during Easter break with everyone helping.  Going to make it a family day – picnic and everything.

Trying to grow some from potatoes which we have bought from the shops too but have started to sprout in the kitchen - wonder if we will get anything from them.

Roosters Red Potatoes
Russet red skin with shallow eyes. They have fluffy yellow flesh and make brilliant roasties.  Can be used for jackets and chips too of course.

We have a few varieties

Red Duke of York
With red skin this potato is said to have floury flesh so will be nice and versatile - can be boiled, mashed, roasted, baked and chipped. A brilliant all rounder.  Hope we get a good crop as sounds like a winner.

Maris Piper
Golden skin, creamy flesh with fluffy texture.  Another good all rounder. Purple flowers and a main crop potato. Apparently they make the best roast potatoes.

Maris Peers
These small potatoes are ideal for boiling and steaming for use in salads, they can also be used as a roaster eaten hot or cold. Tasty small salad potatoes.

King Edwards
Creamy coloured skin with red blushes these light fluffy flesh made ideal baking/jacket potatoes and fab roasties.  Also ideal for chips too.

Lovely sunny day

Just back from a lovely few hours at the allotment.  Blue skies and the sun beating down couldn't be better.  Still road works near by and the roundabouts out blocked off so we had to park in Bents car park and carry everything across the road.  Once arrived on the plot with everything we just had to eat our lunch. Sandwiches and crisps basic is best.  All fuelled and ready to go we have managed to put two little raised beds in for our Merren.  She simply loves being there and joining in, running around and generally getting mucky.

Once the raised beds at filled with what seemed like endless amounts of compost Merren helped to put in a pea frame with me and planted her favorite treat ~peas.

Then we filled the deeper bed and planted carrots and beetroot.  Fingers crossed we will have some shoots soon.

Nick finished digging over our main bed for potatoe, onions, leeks and sweet potatoes.  We then made a straightish path from one end to the other and covered in bark.

Looking better every day.  Back again soon.

Started planting

A busy hour before the light faded.  More back breaking digging. Our daughter just love going, running around and climbing in the compost, filling tubs with soil.

Actually planted some bargain fruit bushes from Aldi, let's hope the grow and give us some lovely fruit.  We planted three of each ; raspberry,  blackberry and black currents.

We ate slowly getting there.  Off work for easter break and looking or ward to getting lots more done.  Hoping to add some raised beds and plant more veggies - potatoes onions and what ever we can.  It will be a mad couple of weeks. Let's hope we get some nice weather and ideal planting days.

We've broken ground (And our backs)

Well we've started. It was hard going, ground very wet and claggy,  going to take a while to get it ready.  Two hours to dig over a 3m x 6m bed that's the potato bed  almost ready. Need to dig in more compost.  The next bed will be for onions.

Met a few other allotmenteers, one who had made a good start on double digging and another had made fantastic start with several wooden raised beds already in place when we arrived early afternoon.  We managed to do 2 hours solid digging.  Very tiring as the ground was very soggy and squelchy, but lots of manure and extra compost we will soon get it in better condition.  We are going to take our time and grow the beds around the perimetre of the plot until we have gone all the way around meeting up with where our greenhouse will be in about 6/8 weeks.

Cannot wait to get the tomatoes and cucumbers in the greenhouse.  It is difficult to imagine how it will all look in the summer, hopefully we will have an abundance of veg.  But at the moment its just Mud, Mud, Mud.

Now we are home warming up and then time for tea.

Nice roast chicken veg and roasties for tea, then bath and early night as I'm up for work at 5am.  Then back to allotment afterwards.  We'll soon have it ship shape.

It's huge

Been for a visit.  We can start tomorrow.  It's all got to be double dug.  Think we will be planning to do it bed by bed or we will never get anything done.  Onions and potatoes are going in first, then peas and beans.   Had a lovely walk around Trebaron Garden Centre and bought some Seed Potatoes First Earlies - they are now happily chitting in an egg box so we will be able to plant these once all the double digging has been done.  Also got some more seeds; Leeks, carrots and more peas - my daughter loves peas so we could never have too many of them. Also got some Red Baron Onion sets - need to read up on them - any advice on any of these would be lovely so please feel free to share your knowledge.  Being first time allotmenteers means we have a lot to learn.

Lots of lovely blank canvases all the ready to start

First Plan !

Well I have had a go at a plan for our Allotment ... it is so big, its going to be hard work filling this plot and keeping up with everything.

Swiss Chard ~ First little seedlings

Swiss Chard ~ Lucullus / Beta vulgaris cicla

Our first little plants are growing fast - never eaten this little plant before so looking forward to trying it. The added bonus with this lovely plant is you can harvest when young and mature and a long season - sowing from March to August.

A fast growing abundant variety ~ The young leaves can be eaten like spinach and the stems can be used like asparagus. Needs a nutrient rich and moist soil.

Height : 50cm (20") ~ Spread: 40cm (16")

New allotment plan (updated)

We are plot no 26 and could have plot 20 as well.
Decisions decisions !

update  ..... think we will stick with just one plot until we know what we are doing - don't want to take on too much and it all go horribly wrong

All Signed Up

Well yesterday we met with the nice guy from Bents and handed our allotment pack with our agreement and taken over to the plot - we got plot number 26 and offered the option to take another plot at the end of ours - have to think about the extra plot - lots of space see how we go.

we can start planting soon, have already been planting up seed trays ready to put into the greenhouse.  we have gone through our seeds and deciding what to plant first.

Got to double dig all over first which will be good exercise, can see a few bad backs and plenty of soaks in the bath over the coming weeks.  Got a couple of weeks off work soon so we will be down there every day come rain or shine.  Cannot wait to get started - will be putting pictures up soon so we can see our progress.

I must admit it is a little daunting, it is a lot bigger in reality than on paper.

more updates coming soon.

hope you will come back to see our progress and please feel free to post any tips on starting out as this is our first allotment, we have been growing veg in our back garden but this is a lot different.

back soon with pictures and updates.
